Increased accessibility through better packaging solutions
Accessibility can make or break the success of a product, which is a crucial consideration for everything we make at SIG. We pride ourselves on making sustainable packaging, but we also ensure our packaging is usable and meets the challenges and needs of consumers.
Founded in Brazil in 2017 by a team of entrepreneurs and beverage experts, Fabenne set out to make wine accessible. The founders of Fabenne noticed that while wine production was growing in Brazil, consumption wasn't. Wine was too expensive, meaning most Brazilians only drank it on special occasions. Fabenne set out to fix the problem of accessibility by launching a bag-in-box format in 2019.
The challenge: an inaccessible product
Wine is traditionally packaged in 750mL glass bottles, which presents a problem for a company looking to make their wine widely accessible. Glass bottles are heavy and costly to ship, wine begins to oxidize when it's opened, and the environmental impact of glass is substantial. A New York Times article reports that "switching to bag-in-box (BIB) wine for 97% of the wines produced to be consumed in one year would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by about two million tons, or the equivalent of retiring 400,000 cars."
Over the last few years, Brazil has emerged as a leading wine producer in South America, but Brazilians weren't naturally grabbing bottles of wine off the shelf. Fabenne saw this as an accessibility issue: glass is hard to transport, and glass bottles are taxing to produce. They knew bag-in-box would help preserve the quality of their wines but hypothesized that it would also make them more accessible to a larger audience.
The solution: bag-in-box
Fabenne began packaging wine in our 3L bag-in-box format. They currently utilize our bag-in-box for retail and institutional settings, providing sustainably packaged wine directly to consumers and also to restaurants and bars.
Now consumers can buy wine at an affordable rate, knowing that their wine will taste delicious from the first sip to the last drop. Along with increased quality assurances, our packaging streamlined operations for Fabenne, which offered cost savings due to simplified inventory needs.
The result: a fresh answer
Sustainability and accessibility go hand in hand. Fabenne broke down barriers to wine consumption by making their product more convenient. Ultimately, switching from glass to bag-in-box was economical and better for the planet. Our flexible packaging solutions:
