Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
At SIG, we want to give back more to society and the planet than we take - to become net positive.
Together with WWF Switzerland we are protecting a large area of forest in Mexico to restore and conserve jaguar habitat corridors.
As part of our community engagement, this year we will again support a school in the project area with our donation instead of Christmas gifts for our business partners.
Last year, we helped the school, located near the Marismas Nacionales Biosphere Reserve, rebuild after a hurricane and install a photovoltaic system to cool the classrooms with fans during the hot season.
With this year's donation, we will be able to provide the school with energy-efficient light bulbs and laptops that will allow them to make the most of their new photovoltaic system and to operate completely independent of the grid, which is unreliable in this region.
We are confident that this will have a positive impact on the school's performance and the students' prospects for a better future.
Creating more thriving forests is a core goal of our sustainability strategy. Through our partnership with WWF Switzerland, we support on-the-ground projects that improve forest sustainability, biodiversity and resilience.
Together, we will restore 750 hectares of degraded forest by working directly with local communities in core areas to increase connectivity and resilience. Outside the forests, we are helping to improve agricultural practices.
Cultivated and livestock grazing lands will be permeable to wildlife, resilient to climate change, and provide increased income for local people. We will strengthen governance and effective management of protected areas to create 100,000 hectares of effectively protected forests that benefit both people and biodiversity, such as jaguars.
